EP.63 | Ironclad your lower back w/ Cory Gregory
How's your lower back feeling? Stiff, tight or weak? Many of us out there have experienced one of these three feelings at some point whether you are a lifter or not. There are many things that can cause a stiff, tight or weak lower back. Maybe you sit at a desk all day every day or you have a previous back injury that you have been nursing. These are just a few examples of the many out there that may be the cause of your discomfort.
Sooo what do you do about it? For the sake of this article, let's assume that you are a Crossfitter, Olympic weightlifter or a Powerlifter. If fall into one of these categories, you already know how important proper squat form is in training. Getting out of position, overcompensating and bad mechanics are a few ways that you can injure yourself while performing a front or back squat.
You must bullet-proof your lower back. One of the most effective ways that Cory (in the video above) has found to bullet-proof the lower back is by incorporating weighted back extensions into his training 5 or 6 times per week. He'll vary the reps and weight each and every day to give his body a different stimulus. Doing so will keep the body guessing, your lower back loose and ultimately it will make the lower back region much more stable. Sure, you may have done back extensions in the past, but more than likely it was just with your bodyweight. Adding weight into the mix gives you another gear you didn't know you had.
Risk for injury decreases
This is essential when you are in the bottom of a squat because it has large stability demands. It will help you feel more stable as you go down, while you are in the bottom, and on the way back up to the starting position. With more stability and strength, your lifts will begin to increase, without a doubt. On top of this, you are decreasing your chance for injury because of the strength you are developing in your lower back.
